Phaneuf Goes Green

Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium recently became the first New Hampshire firm to partner with the Green Burial Council and offer an eco-friendly burial package.

The green option uses no toxins that can contaminate ground water with waste and offers a bio-degradable casket without metals and chemically-treated material.

Working alongside cemeteries and funeral providers, the Green Burial Council began the green burial movement in the United States in 2005. Many cemetaries across the country are catering to green standards by doing away with headstone and mausoleums and instead are recording burial sites with GPS technology.

Phaneuf's green package prohibits formaldehyde-based embalming and uses no hardwoods. "We use a hand woven eco-friendly willow branch casket which is biodegradable," says Director Buddy Phaneuf. "This package provides everything necessary for a graveside burial within a green cemetery, conventional cemetery, or in certain instances, on private property."

Quick facts about U.S. burials (from National Geographic):
  • 30 million feet of wood including tropical hardwood is used each year for caskets
  • 90,000 tons of steel is used for burials each year - as much as was used for the Golden Gate Bridge
  • 1.6 million tons of concrete are used for burial vaults each year
  • Over 800,000 gallons of embalming fluid is used each year
